Japanese plates - available on June 24

1. When will Japanese plates be released?
Japanese plates will be released on Wednesday June 24 at 8:30am

2. Where can I purchase Japanese plates?
- online at vplates.com.au,
-by calling VicRoads on 1300 660 417, or
- in person at a VicRoads Customer Service Centre 

3. What designs will be available?
There will be 2 Japanese plate designs to choose from.

Plate one - Japanese script
This plate will feature a Japanese script, which will be placed above the combination in the middle of the plate and the state identifier “Victoria” at the bottom of the plate. The plate will be White background with Green font.

Plate two - Japanese Car symbol
This plate is very similar to the authentic Japanese plates and will feature two Japanese symbols. One symbol will be placed on the left hand side of the plate, and the other will be placed at the top of the plate, next to the state identifier “VIC”.  This plate will also have a White background with Green font.

4. What combinations are available?

Plate one: Japanese script
The Japanese script plate has room for up to 6 characters. The below combinations can be applied to this plate design:

AAA.0 to ZZZZZ.9*
AAA.00 to ZZZZ.99*
300.000 to 999.999*
0.AAA to 9.ZZZ*
0.AAAA to 9.ZZZZ*
00.AAA to 99.ZZZ*
00.AAAA to 99.ZZZZ*

Personalised (2x3 and 2x4) 
AA.000 to ZZ.999*
AA.0000 to ZZ.9999*

AAA.000 to ZZZ.000*

Future General Issue

Plate two: Japanese Car symbol
The Japanese car symbol plate has room for up to 5 characters only. The 5 character limit is due to the Japanese symbol which is featured on the plate. The below combinations can be applied to this plate design:

AAA.0 to ZZZZ.9*
AAA.00 to ZZZ.99*
0.AAA to 9.ZZZ*
0.AAAA to 9.ZZZZ*
00.AAA to 99.ZZZ*

Personalised (2x3)
AA.000 to ZZ.999*

5. What is the Japanese plate size?
The Japanese plate size is 330mm wide x 165mm high. This is exactly the same as authentic Japanese plates and should fit perfectly into the number plate recess of Japanese vehicles.

6. Is slimline size available?
Slimline size is not available for Japanese plates.

7. Can I have one of each of the Japanese plate designs?
No, both plates must have the same design.

8. How much do they cost?
$495 for a new Japanese plate.
$195 to Restyle your existing combination to the Japanese plate (applicable combinations listed above).

9. Can you Restyle a Club Reg plate to the Japanese plate design?
The Club Registration scheme is a unique General Issue category with its own defined combination range and restrictions. This means all Custom Plates cannot be issued under this particular scheme.

10. Are Japanese plates available for motorcycles?
Due to the unique size of the plate, Japanese plates are only available for cars.
