Unauthorised plates

VicRoads warns custom plates users that the display on a vehicle of number plates that have not been issued by VicRoads is an offence under the Road Safety (Vehicles) Regulations 2009.

Police and authorised VicRoads officers have power to seize any number plate they have reasonable grounds for suspecting was not issued in accordance with the Road Safety Act.

A person who makes, uses, knowingly has custody or possession of, sells or utters any identifying number or general identification mark that is authorised or required under the Road Safety Act is guilty of an offence punishable by a fine of 10 penalty units or imprisonment for two months.
