We’ve likened the option to Restyle your existing Victorian number plate to having a makeover, getting a new hairdo or even undertaking a home reno. Giving new life to something old and boring is always exciting and Restyling your number plate is just that.
Here we answer some of the most frequently asked questions about Restyling.
1. What is Restyling?
verb: to change the style of..…
Michaela changed the style of her number plate
Restyling lets you change the design, colour or size of your existing number plate. It’s also offered at a bargain price. What’s more, with over 30 plate designs, there’s loads of options to choose from including our AFL, Euro, Liquid Metal, Deluxe, and Style ranges to name a few.
There are a couple of things to keep in mind before you start:
- While you can change the style of your plate, the one thing that will not change is the plate combination, this must remain the same.
- You can only Restyle your plate into a design that can accommodate your combination. For example, some plate styles can only have four or five character combinations, so you can’t Restyle into those if your number plate has six characters.
The good news is, our handy online tool will automatically present the designs that work with your combination.

4. What do I do with my old plates when my new plates arrive?
Even though we know you’d probably love to keep your old plates for sentimental reasons, they should always be returned to your closest VicRoads Customer Service Centre after your new plates are on your car.
5. Is there a fee to assign my plates to my vehicle?
No, the first assignment to a car for a custom plate is included in the price. Yes that’s right, the simple act of Restyling a general issue plate transforms it into a custom plate. This means you now own the display rights to your combination and can take your plates with you from car to car.*
*Any subsequent assignments between cars will incur a fee.
