Heritage plates have become one of the most sought-after registration plate types, and the fascination is growing. There are three key factors that make them so desirable:

  • Smaller numbers mean greater exclusivity

  • Numbers often reflect cultural and personal significance

  • Certain number patterns exude prestige

The power of low numbers

Auction results show a clear trend: the smaller the number, the higher the value. Plates with one, two and three-digit plates consistently command top prices because of their rarity.

In 2024, Heritage plate ‘20’ sold privately for $2.54million, proving that collectors are willing to pay a premium for these historic plates.

Numbers that speak volumes

Beyond being identifiers, Heritage plates can carry cultural meaning as well. Certain numbers resonate strongly with buyers from diverse backgrounds, influencing demand and price.

In February 2024, Heritage plate 1.188, released to celebrate the Year of the Dragon, sold for $289,000 at the VicRoads Lunar New Year auction - over 45% higher than the 2023 average price for a four-digit plate. The number 1 is considered a lucky number for dragons and 8 represents prosperity and success.

Patterns of prestige

Six-digit plates bring their own allure, often featuring visually striking combinations like repeating numbers, mirrored sequences, and alternating patterns. These designs add an extra layer of desirability.

But beyond aesthetics, the true charm often lies in personal meaning. Whether it’s a birthday, anniversary, or milestone, these plates often tell a story that makes them priceless to their owners.
